PMI UNY spent an evening learning about Mastering the Art of Managing Up! Last week, PMI UNY met at The Century House to hear Matt Alfonso from Culture Through Leadership discuss Mastering the Art of Managing Up! We often train as Project Managers on how to manage those across and below, but it is rare that we discuss how to manage those above us in a project or organizational hierarchy. Matt provided seven key points for establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with our direct supervisors. As a group, we discussed challenges we had faced and strategies we had used to overcome challenges to effectively communicating with our managers. Additionally, PMI UNY recognized our volunteers from the 2022-2023 programming session! Jeremy McDougall and Chris Foster PMI UNY would like to thank the following individuals for their contributions to the chapter: Karen HugginsMandy McCordLilani AsmaraChris FordKim ViningZach MaddingKayla WheelerChris FosterEric Van Hall   Jeremy McDougall and Zach Madding   We look forward to seeing you everyone at the November Chapter Meeting! David Barrett, author and speaker, presents "Taking Our Project Management Careers to the Next Level” Thank you David Barrett! Last week, PMI UNY kicked off its ’23-’24 programming season with “Taking Our Project Management Careers to the Next Level” presented by author and speaker David Barrett. Our attendees learned how, once we have mastered “the basic mechanics”, what else we need to continue to advance our careers as Project Managers. While we enjoyed food and beverages provided by Common Roots Brewing and desserts from Simply Yours, David gave us valuable insight he has gained over his three decades of training project managers to succeed in an ever-evolving workplace. Oh, and by the way – he is also the founder of ProjectBites, which offers 20-minute videos, podcasts, and live events for project managers and other professionals to further their knowledge and careers. And we are excited to announce that PMI Upstate New York has entered into a partnership with ProjectBites – ALL of our members get access to ProjectBites FREE! Click here to learn more. Ken, the owner, led us on a tour of his facility in west Schenectady, New York.  We learned about both the process of distilling, and the business aspects of being a small distiller in Upstate New York. Ken, who teaches classes on distilling to interested students, framed his business history and decisions in terms of the project management principles we all know and love. Topics included everything from timelines to create their products to the legal aspects of being a farm distillery distributing to vendors. We all came away with a solid high-level understanding of aspects of the business. Of course, the tour was only part of the event! After a question and answer period on the business aspects of 36 Locks, Ken led us on a tasting of the great products they make. PMIUNY would like to thank Ken and his whole team at Schenectady Distilling Company for having us! We also would like to thank everyone who came out to join us for our first In-Person Special Event in 2023! Description: Every single day you are walking in other people’s novel ideas: the chair you sit in, your desk, your computer, etc. Some people think, “oh well I’m just not creative”, but creativity can be more deliberate than one might think. Creative problem solving is a skill, like any other skill you can learn it and develop it. There are structured processes that when practiced can allow you to go beyond conventional thinking innately. I will demonstrate the application of a framework that participants can start applying today for better solving. Participants will learn and gain tips on how to best promote ‘outside of the box’ creative problem solving individually and within their project groups. About our guest speaker:  Alexandria Chardavoine is a MBA and PMP holding Project manager with New York State. She is also on the board of our upstate chapter of PMI as the VP of strategic initiatives. With experience working on a variety of projects, she sees that creative problem solving is a skill that is very beneficial in any project as well as in one’s life. Alexandria has given knowledge sharing presentations to various professional audiences including New York state employees, hospital staff, and contractors. The PMI UNY Board is a cohesive group providing wisdom, experience, and diversity to responsibly govern our chapter.  Board members are elected to two-year staggered terms so that we retain continuity in planning, creating, and executing strategic initiatives. The Board and its volunteers strive to strengthen our professional organization and membership. This past year the chapter transitioned to virtual meetings, events and Professional Developments Days. Holding meetings virtually allowed for more members (and non-members) to participate and also provided presentations on many diverse topics by speakers from near and far. It is our hope that we will soon be able to return to holding in person events. We hope that your passion and commitment to Project Management and the Upstate New York Chapter will drive you to participate now and in the future. Below are the specifics. The chapter engaged the International Institute for Learning Inc. (IIL) present the seminar entitled “Agile Practices for all Projects”.  IIL is very experienced, presenting over 150 courses around the world for government, industrial, and educational/professional entities on topics including project management, Agile and Scrum, leadership, Microsoft Project, and business analysis.    Our instructor, Roy Schilling, led the day-long seminar and presented Foundation Concepts Agile Requirement Techniques Agile Software Development Techniques Agile Initiating and Planning Processes Agile Delivery Processes Implementing Agile Practices Summary and Next Steps   Over 125 PMI members enrolled and attended on one of the two days. Our members were very flexible with the switch from an in-person to the virtual format.  Initial feedback from participants was very good.  Our members were favorably impressed with the IIL offering, the instructor, and the format.   We will return in May 2021 to a spring schedule for our Annual Professional Development Day.  IIL will again be our course presenter.  We hope to be able to hold an in-person event, but we will be watching current events in order to make the best choice for the best format at that time.
